"Celebrating Cromford"

Cromford in Derbyshire village festival on 19th, 20th and 21st June, 2009

                This is the fifth year of Celebrating Cromford, when we celebrate our village and the varied talents of the people who live here. The event is planned at monthly meetings, open to everyone.
                New for this year is an open day at Pisani PLC, marble importers and merchants, on Saturday 20 June at their site at High Peak, Derby Road. See programme below for details.

FRIDAY 19th June

Treasure Hunt - 5.45pm. Starts and finishes at the Community Centre.

Opening Ceremony - 7pm. The Community Centre. Matthew Parris will be opening Celebrating Cromford and presenting prizes for the short story competition and the children's painting competition.
      Matthew Parris was Member of Parliament for West Derbyshire from 1979 until 1986. He is now a radio and television presenter and pundit and has written many books on politics and travel.

The ceremony will be followed by a concert by Cromford Community Band.

All weekend - *Terminator* Beer Festival at the Boat Inn.
8.30pm. The band Idle Hands play at the Boat Inn.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY 20th and 21st June

Alison Uttley guided walk Saturday only. 10.30am from the Market Place, taking in places linked with the children's author and local history.

Art Exhibition 10am-4pm - At the Methodist Church, Water Lane.
Contemporary art exhibition by Wanda Brookes and her students. There will be a demonstration of contemporary water-colour at 12 noon on Sunday only.
Refreshments available.

Art Exhibition At 94 The Hill, plus a coconut shy in the front garden.

Beer Festival  At the Boat Inn over the weekend.

Children's Painting Competition - for the children at Cromford School.
10am-4pm - entries will be displayed at Cromford Mill.

Cromford Community Band - Saturday only. The Band will be playing at the Methodist Church at 2pm.

Cromford School Summer Fair - Saturday only from 10am to 2pm.

Cromford Soughs - At the Institute, Cromford Hill. 5pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday. Showings of the 1960s film "The Underground Journey" of the exploration of Cromford Soughs.

Decorated Ducks - Saturday only. At 1pm, judging of the ducks by Rev Nick Grayshon and prizegiving in the Marquee, Scarthin.
Information about the duck race and decorated ducks competition is in the Post Office.

Gundog Display - 3pm in the field adjacent to Alison House, (school side).

Market Stalls 10am-4pm - There will be stalls on Scarthin on Saturday and Sunday. There will also be stalls on North Street on Saturday only. If you want to have a stall, phone Richard Ash on 822541.

Model Railway exhibition 10am-4pm - Cromford Model Railway group's exhibition at the Community Centre.

Morris Dancers - Saturday only. At 2.30pm, 3.45pm and 5pm. Ripley Morris dancers will be performing at different venues around the village.

Music in the Marquee - Saturday only.
1.30pm, *Wirksworth Phoenix Choir.
3.00pm, *Dale Diva, Cromford's ladies chorus founded by Ally Law in November 2007.
8.00pm, *The Pitz play live.

Osteopathy Centre Open Day, Market Place, from 10am-4pm. Talk to the therapists and see demonstrations of their skills: Osteopathy, reflexology, acupuncture, aromatherapy, Reiki, Indian head massage etc.
Small charge for taster sessions and refreshments. All proceeds to a local charity.

Parish map - There will be a stall where those who would like to help compile a Parish Map like Bonsall's can sign up.

Pisani open day - Saturday only - 11am-4pm, Derby Road, High Peak Junction.
New for this year.         Established in Cromford for over fifty years, Pisani's are opening their site so people can go and have a look at the huge variety of stone and marble and visit the pretty little Othodox chapel they have established on the site. At 12 noon there will be a blessing of the spring on the site.
At 2pm there will be a service of intercession to the Othodox Saints of Britain.
There is plenty of parking, or if the weather is good why not walk along the canal to High Peak Junction. Children must be supervised at all times.

Plant swap - 10am-4pm at 35 Market Place.

Refreshments - St Mary's Church on Mill Lane will be putting on cream teas.
The Methodist Church on Water Lane will provide refreshments from 10.30am to 4pm.

12noon to 5pm. The Brooks family at Quarry Cottage, 54 The Hill. Wood fired pizzas in the garden. Hand made silver jewellery. In aid of Derbyshire Autism Support Group.

12noon onwards, barbecue at the Community Centre.

Scarthin Promenade   is 100 years old this June. There will be a small display about the history of the promenade in the marquee.

Short Story Competion - A competition for short stories (up to 1500 words), for secondary school children in two age groups, 11-14 and 15-18. This will be arranged through the schools.
The stories will be displayed at Cromford Mill with the children's paintings.

St Mary's Church - Open 10am-4pm. Flower Festival on the theme of "Celebration of Marriage". Cream teas available.
Built by Sir Richard Arkwright and consecrated in 1797. The wall paintings created to mark both the centenary of the consecration of the church and Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, in 1897, were restored in 2002.

Stationary Engines Display 10am-4pm outside Methodist Church, Water Lane.

Traction Engine - Saturday only from 10am to 12noon. Dave and Sue Cope will be showing their 1917 Fowler Tiger tractor around the village.

Willersley Castle - Saturday at 10am, 12noon and 2pm tours of the Arkwright family home and grounds, now a holiday centre.
Sunday - Tours at 12noon and 2pm.
There will be an exhibition of the history of Willersley Castle in the music room.

SUNDAY 21st June

PROGRAMME AS SATURDAY -The following events take place on SUNDAY only:

Open Air Service - Sunday at 10.30am, a joint Methodist and St Mary's service on Scarthin Promenade.

Art Exhibition - 10am-4pm at the Methodist church as Saturday. There will be a demonstration of contemporary water colour by Wanda Brookes at 12 noon.

Art Exhibition At 94 The Hill, plus a coconut shy in the front garden.

Music in the Marquee - At 3pm "Murder City Sweethearts" perform.

Story Telling - At 3pm upstairs in the Gothic Warehouse, Spirits of the Peak.
Local stories by Storytelling cafe.

Duck Race - To finish at 4.30pm at Cromford Meadows.
Information about this year's duck race and decorated duck competition is in the Post Office.

Celebration of Marriage 6pm service at St Mary's Church.

EVENTS ON OTHER DAYS

Cricket Match - Sunday, 14th June at 2pm on Cromford Meadows.
Cromford CC vs Cromford Veterans.   Bar and BBQ.

Story Telling Cafe - Monday, 15th June at 7.30pm in the Boat Inn.
Spirits of the Peak - strange tales from the Peak District.   Admission £7.

Belper Singers - Saturday, 18th July at St Mary's Church, Mill Lane

Sunflower Competition - Monday, 27th August. Judging begins on Scarthin. Proceeds will go to a charity of the winner's choice.
