This is the fourth year of Celebrating Cromford, when we celebrate our village and the varied talents of the people who live here. Simon Groom, known to many from his years as a Blue Peter presenter, will be opening Celebrating Cromford on Friday evening at the Community Centre. Simon runs his own production company and has created documentaries for Channel 4 and Radio 4, as well as working in local radio. EVENTS PLANNED FOR THE WEEKEND
OPENING CEREMONY - 7pm on Friday June 27th at the Community Centre. Simon Groom will open the festival and will present the prizes for the children's painting competition. TREASURE HUNT - 6pm Friday, starts and ends at the Community Centre.
PAINTING COMPETITIONS - A young people's competition for 4 age groups: under 5, BEER FESTIVAL - Live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Saturday night outdoors in the marquee unless wet. MARKET STALLS - 10am to 4pm. Stalls on Scarthin Promenade and North Street on Saturday and Sunday, and on Scarthin on Sunday.
REFRESHMENTS WELL DRESSING - Well dressing outside the Methodist Church on Water Lane, created by Jennie Binks and helpers. CROMFORD SCHOOL FAIR - The school fair will be on Saturday from 10am to 2pm. TRACTION ENGINE DISPLAY - Dave and Sue Cope will be showing their 1917 Fowler Tiger tractor on the Market Place from 10am to 4pm. STATIONARY ENGINES - Saturday and Sunday - a display of stationary engines at the Methodist Church from 10am to 4pm.
ART AND CRAFT DISPLAYS - Events below 10am - 4pm Saturday and Sunday
• 12pm - 7pm Saturday and Sunday: SPINNING DEMONSTRATIONS - In the marquee, Scarthin. 10am - 4pm. VILLAGE SHOW - 11am to 4pm on Saturday and 11am to 3pm on Sunday upstairs in the Community Centre. A village exhibition of art and craft. SHORT STORY COMPETITION - A competition for stories (up to 1500 words) will be judged by Peter Kerry, TV and radio writer and novelist. There are three age categories - up to 11, 11 to 16 and adults. Please attach your name, address, phone number and the category to your entry and hand in to the post office. Saturday 28th June, 2pm - 3.30 pm on Scarthin Promenade, or Scarthin Bookshop cafe if wet, meet Emmerdale and The Archers scriptwriters Peter Kerry and Chris Thompson. MORRIS DANCING - Ripley Morris will be dancing on Saturday at 1pm in North Street, at 2.30pm on the Market Place and at 4pm on Scarthin Promenade. GUIDED WALK - Saturday. There will be a guided walk around places associated with local children's author Alison Uttley and bringing in local history. Starting at 10.30am from Cromford Meadows - about 4 miles.
TOURS OF WILLERSLEY CASTLE AND GROUNDS - There will be three tours of the Arkwright family home, now a holiday centre, on Saturday at 10am, 12noon and 2pm.
TRIPS ROUND GOOD LUCK MINE - Saturday, 11am and 2.30pm. By ticket only from the marquee on Scarthin. Get them well in advance of the time of the visit as you have to drive to the mine on Via Gellia. FILM OF CROMFORD SOUGHS - Saturday at 3.30pm in the Institute. Showing of the 1960s film of the exploration of Cromford Soughs. DALEDIVA - Cromford's ladies chorus will be singing in the marquee on Saturday from 3pm to 3.50pm. The choir was founded by Ally Law in November 2007 and now has 50 members. FAMILY STORY TELLING - 4pm at the Boat Inn. Free. Children must be accompanied by an adult. OPEN AIR SERVICE - Sunday at 10.30am, a joint Methodist and St Mary's service on Scarthin Promenade. PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION - 10am to 4pm. Photography exhibition and competition at the Institute. CRICKET MATCH - Cromford cricket team vs veterans, at 2pm on Sunday. Bar and BBQ food available. GUN DOG DEMONSTRATION - 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, in the field next to Alison House, (school side). LIVE BAND - Sunday 3pm in the marquee on Scarthin Promenade.
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION - There is a competition for the best photograph taken of this year's Celebrating Cromford weekend. Photographs should be taken to B Payne and Sons, the chemist, in the Market Place, where they will be exhibited in the window for the following two weeks. Photos should be no larger than 6" x 8".
